so this was it. the moment of truth. after talking to one of her friends from back home, and talking about ryland, her friend had pointed out that it was more than obvious that josey liked the kid. truth was, josey had never thought of ryland that way. not until their kiss. not until she'd found out he had a girlfriend back home and felt herself get jealous. not until ryland had said they'd broken up and felt her heart practically burst with excitement. was that bad? josey felt like it was wrong to rejoice over ryland and his ex-girlfriend's split, but she couldn't help it. her and ryland were alike in so many ways, and like a couple others, ryland understood her. josey was odd, and she knew it. but on tour, there were people that actually understood her. they didn't judge her or give her glares for being weird. they accepted her, and only one person back home had really accepted her.
tour had been really good to josey. she'd met fantastic people, and made a ton of new friends. sure, she was only the merch kid for radio bye bye, and she would much rather be on a stage and performing her own music, it was better than nothing, right? if she hadn't gone on tour with radio bye bye, she wouldn't have met ryland. or david. or duncan. or any of her closest friends. but never had she imagined that she would develop feelings for any of those said friends. especially not ryland. then again, it did make sense. he was sweet, and he was always there for her. so that was why josey stood there now, outside his band's bus. she hesitated, but eventually lifted her fist and knocked on the door. she dropped her hand to her side, beginning to fidget a little bit. josey started playing with her hair, picking at her nails, and going through all the different actions that were sure signs she was nervous. made sense, because she was nervous. she was very nervous.

ryland had thought long and hard about his actions and his feelings. after recently cheating on his (ex) girlfriend with one of his best friends in the world, he couldn't help but wonder if he felt as though he should be more than 'just friends' with josey. they were close, and he would have to think seriously about if he wanted to have a long distance relationship, considering they didn't live extremely close to each other. long distance relationships were pretty hard to manage, he knew that much. he had no doubt that they would be faithful to one another, that was just they types of people they both were, but he didn't want to grow apart.. not that they wouldn't if they were 'just friends' either. relationships led to fights and anger, sometimes. he didn't know if he could handle that. but then again, josey meant the world to him, it was like she was the sun and he was the moving planets around her. he didn't think he could make it without her, and he really, honestly had feelings for her.
he just didn't want to be the one to break her heart. that would kill him, he was sure. he had already hurt one girl in his life, and he could honestly say he wanted to stop it at that. he was saddened to be able to say that he had cheated, though he felt that he had cheated for a good purpose. he and his girlfriend hadn't really been getting along before he left for the tour, and during the tour he had developed real feelings for josey. ryland could honestly see himself being happy with josey for the rest of his life. she was sweet and an optimist. she was good at her job and also a rather good musician. he couldn't understand why he hadn't met her earlier in his life, but he was glad they had finally come together. as of now, he was single and josey was truly the only person on his mind. he told himself daily that she probably didn't want him, but he could never be sure.
he jumped from the couch as he heard a knock on the door, hurrying to open it. his face brightened when he saw josey standing at the door. "hey, josey!" he said enthusiastically. "come on in, kid." his voice was welcoming as he stepped to the side for her to walk up the stairs and into the bus.

josey bit her lip, scratching the side of her head as she waited for ryland to open the door. was he even there? had she missed him? did he not want to see her? all these worries and more swirled around josey's head, making it throb slightly. she pressed her fingertips lightly to her temples, rubbing in small circles. the seconds felt like hours, and as josey heard the door begin to open, she dropped her hands back to her sides. she didn't want to worry whoever opened the door by standing there and rubbing her temples. josey had never liked it when people saw her upset, mostly because she didn't like when people worried about her. ever. it was a weird trait, but that was josey. she was known as the bubbly and optimistic girl. she rarely cried, though to say that she hadn't during tour would be a lie. then again, only david and ryland knew about that incident. it had been a bit expected, obviously, but it had only been because of her brother. he was engaged now, and josey hadn't even know he'd had a girlfriend. nice family, right? josey was used to being out of loop about her brother's life, but the fact that her dad had known about said girlfriend and she hadn't had been a little hurtful.
either way, josey was over it now. she'd met said fiancee and she was pretty content with her brother's choice in girls. of course, the only reason david knew about her crying was because he'd walked in on her and ryland only knew because... well, josey pretty much talked to ryland about everything. he knew just about everything about her. normally she wasn't open about her past, and most people didn't even know about her family. they just knew where she lived and that she was without her mother. not even david knew her sister and grandma were also dead, and david knew quite a bit about josey. he was practically her brother, which josey found slightly ironic because her real brother's name was david.
josey grinned as she saw ryland opening the door. "hey, ryland." she greeted him, the wide smile still on her face. as he invited her inside the bus, she walked up the stairs and into the bus with a smile still beaming on her face brightly. she looked at ryland, throwing her lean arms around ryland's neck in a hug. "how are you?" josey asked him as she pulled back and settled down onto the couch. sure, she was nervous on the inside, but josey had never been one to show how nervous she was on the outside. so she just kept smiling. she looked up at ryland, bringing her knees up to her chest as she slid her feet out of her shoes and brought them up to rest on the couch. ryland was cute, funny, sweet... just about everything that josey was looking for. josey looked down at her knees, lifting a hand to scratch the side of her head.

ryland looked at the girl that stood before hikm, god, she was gorgeous. there was no other way to describe her physical appearance. and she was absolutely beautiful on the inside, as well. she was perfect in every way, shape, and form. he couldn't imagine her any other way. he actually had never really thought about a girl like this, especially one that he wasn't even dating. he couldn't honestly say that he could imagine it any different, either. she was his best friend, he wasn't supposed to be attracted to her like this. he remembered the moral of every good book he'd ever read in his life. don't fall in love with your best friend. it never ended good when that happened, but he couldn't help it. when she had her arms wrapped around him, when she was merely talking to him, he felt like they were every thing that was right in a real relationship. he couldn't think of what he would do without josey in his life. tour would've been a sort of good hell, and he wouldn't be half as happy without josey as he was with her. it was pretty safe to say ryland couldn't stand being away from her for too long. he told her just about everything in his life, and he was pretty sure she told him as much as she was comfortable with, which, as far as he was concerned, was quite a bit. he didn't understand why she trusted him as much as she did considering he totally hated the band she worked for, but whatever the reason behind it all was, he didn't mind.
he returned her hug, his arms wrapping around her waist with a big, goofy smile. ryland loved spending time with josey. she was interesting and fun to be around. there was never those awkward pauses, they kept the conversation going. he loved that about her. "me? i'm pretty damn good, especially since you're here." he said with another big smile as he plopped down beside her on the couch. "i've been sitting around this stupid bus all day.. i'm kind of ready to go to a new location, you know?" he asked with a shrug. he looked over at her again, then over at the television. he so badly wanted to tell her how he felt, but he knew that could potentially make things weird, and he definitely didn't want that to happen! he didn't want to lose his best friend over something stupid like personal feelings. he didn't want to experiment how he felt without josey around, because he didn't want to live in a hell made purely to torture him. "how about you?" he asked with yet again, another big smile. he was always so smiley around her, maybe it was because she made him feel happy, or maybe it was because her smile was contagious. he couldn't quite tell, but whatever the reason was fine with him. "how's life been treating you?" he questioned again after just a few seconds, glancing at the television. there was some stupid show on, not that he cared. he was too preoccupied with the girl in front of him.

josey felt her heart skip a beat as she felt ryland's arms wrap around her in return, and another smile spread across her lips. josey tried to rationalize with herself about how she couldn't ever stop smiling around ryland. she was always smiling, wasn't she? of course she was. whether she was around david, duncan, or anybody else, she was smiling. however, she'd never felt her heart skip a beat around anyone else. not since highschool, which had been a good three years ago. josey had almost forgotten what it felt like to get butterflies. such, brody had, for a short amount of time, given her a small bit of those butterflies. but around ryland, the butterflies were so intense they almost made josey dizzy. she held herself back, however. she'd always been good at keeping herself steady. josey had been going on runs a little more often than usual. her normal routine was to run maybe three times a week, but recently she'd been going at least five times. it was odd, but it helped to temporarily tame the butterflies in her gut and it also took all of josey's worries away. when she was running, she was free from all her thoughts, since she usually blasted music in her ears and kept her thoughts on the lyrics and how far she'd ran. but as soon as the adrenaline rush from the run was gone, josey's thoughts began to swirl around all over again, and the butterflies rushed right back into her stomach.
josey had found herself writing music a lot more lately, too. with everything going on from missing family, to being hurt by her brother's secrecy, to her feelings for ryland, muse had been overwhelming her and causing her to stay in her bunk some nights with david's acoustic guitar and a notebook. these were the nights that josey preferred to be left alone completely. she kept her curtain closed, and if anybody tried disturbing her, she would ask them to go away unless it was important. it usually wasn't important, though. josey looked over at ryland, smiling again. she ran a hand over her hair, tucking some of the dark locks behind her ear. "pretty damn good...." josey echoed his words on how he was doing, feeling her cheeks get a little hot when he added in 'especially since you're here.' she couldn't hold back the grin on her face, flashing her pearly whites. she nodded at his next statement. "i know what you mean." she agreed, laughing quietly. josey shifted, moving her legs so she was sitting indian style on the couch. josey shrugged as ryland asked how she'd been doing. "i've been good. as always." she said with a wide smile. her friend's words repeated in her head. i don't care if you're nervous. if HE kissed YOU, he likes you, josey! right as soon as you get past the stupid hey how are you talk, you tell him. promise? josey had promised. she bit down on the inside of her cheek, before opening her mouth to speak again. "i, uhm... i do have something to tell you, though." josey said, looking over at ryland.

ryland looked over the girl in front of him. she was everything he had ever really imagined or hoped for in a girl ever since he was young enough to know he liked girls. she was so extremely perfect that he knew in his mind he had no chance with her besides in his dreams. she was also working for one of the shittiest bands on tour, not music wise, but personality wise, and he couldn't put make it any nicer. that was simply how david and duncan were. they picked on the weak and if they didn't feel triumphant or like they were better than everyone else, they tried their best to make it that way. if they weren't having sex or making someone feel like they were a worthless piece of shit, they weren't doing their job. it truly made him feel sick to his stomach how rude and mean they were. how josey put up with them, he wasn't sure, and he didn't want to learn. apparently, they were friends, and that was her decision to make, not anybody else to make for her. sure, he didn't have to like her decision, but he knew that he couldn't make it for her. no matter what david and duncan did to her friends, and his friends, also.. it was still her choice. sure, sometimes her choice upset him, but he couldn't honestly stop her from making it. it wasn't like it made her any less perfect than she already was. he really enjoyed being around her all the same, as long as the two other males didn't come up in conversation.
ryland smiled as she repeated him every once in awhile and agreed with him. he felt more normal than he did around his family and his close friends. friends that slept on the same bus as him every night for.. well, for awhile. soon enough they would all have to go home and be by themselves and with their families. he could honestly say that despite how much he loved his family, he didn't want to go home. he liked it on tour, and going home meant facing his ex, which was another thing he really didn't want to do. he sort of wished he could've spend the rest of his life sitting next to josey on this tour bus, but he knew he couldn't. "that's good to hear!" he said, his smile spreading across his lips after she told him that she was good. he really liked josey, and it was even better when she was having a good day or when she was happy, which was most days. josey was just an over-all happy person, and when she wasn't happy.. then there was something seriously wrong, and it had to be fixed. he hated when she wasn't happy, it made him unhappy. but that was the last thing on his mind when she told him that she had something she had to tell him. his thoughts were racing. what would she want to tell him? josey was the only person he was ever pessimistic about, probably because he was so close to her. he didn't want to lose her. "mm? and what's that?" he asked with a bright smile.

josey looked down at her lap, struggling to find the words to tell him about her feelings. she hadn't done this in the longest time, mostly because josey was afraid of being rejected. to add onto it, ryland was her best friend. what if he didn't like her back? what if her admitting her feelings would end their friendship? josey didn't know what she would do, where she would be without ryland as her friend. it was better to have him as a friend than nothing at all. but josey had made a promise. she'd promised that she would speak her mind and tell ryland her feelings towards him. by the time she left the bus that day, ryland would know how she felt about him. whether his reaction was good or bad, he would still know. josey really liked ryland; as a friend and so much more. she didn't mind that ryland didn't like a few of her friends. josey was beyond used to people disliking duncan and david. she didn't really blame them, either. they were assholes. even to her. but what most people didn't see was their better sides. josey had, though and she rather enjoyed david and duncan's company at most times. topics related to david and duncan were the only ones avoided when she was talking to ryland.
as ryland asked her what she had to tell him, josey bit down on her tongue. she still struggled to find the right words. "well... i..." she paused, brushing her hair out of her face and tucking it behind her ear. she tried not to fidget, but it was hard. she was nervous, extremely nervous. so nervous, josey could feel her hands trembling just the tiniest bit. "i just wanted you to know that you're one of my best friends... and i really appreciate you being here for me." she decided it was a good place to start, talking about her appreciation. "i mean... you're one of the few people that knows literally everything about me." josey paused, shrugging a little bit. she gave ryland a small smile, just in case he was thinking she was ending their friendship or something stupid like that. "i'm really glad i came on tour because i've met some great people... and you're... one of those great people, ry." she said, looking down at her lap again. "and i... i, uh... i really.... like you." she felt herself stutter slightly over her words, and she looked over at ryland. josey bit down on her bottom lip, waiting for him to say that those feelings weren't mutual.

ryland could honestly say that josey knew every little detail about him that there was to know. he could also say that he felt comfortable just sitting around with her and letting her know all of his deep dark secrets. she avoided sore spots because she knew what they were, and she knew just how to calm him down. it was crazy how much she truly knew about him, and how much he knew about her, but he was glad that they were that close. he didn't know what he would do without her in his life, but all this talk about talking was slightly freaking him out. he didn't want to lose her. had he done something wrong? was all this business with david and duncan finally starting to really piss her off? he couldn't imagine her trying to get rid of her because he didn't like the members of the band she worked for. who could blame him? david and duncan were probably two of the biggest douche bags on the tour, but.. she had never seemed to mind before. had she been lying to him the whole time when she said she didn't mind? he couldn't imagine the small girl lying any more than he could imagine her hating him. it just didn't seem possible to him, nor did it seem fair.
his heart sped up slightly as she spoke simple words. he was, in simple words, terrified that he was about to lose the girl of his dreams. he was willing to be just her friend if that was what she wanted. he would never bring up his true feelings for her if she didn't want him to. ryland wasn't comprehending what she was saying to him. "you.. you're one of my best friends too.. and i have no clue what i would do without you." he was being quieter now that fear had struck his poor heart. what was she getting at? he just didn't understand things like these, or girls in general, really. when she spoke the next small sentence a smile curled over his lips, pulling at his eyes and lips. "yeah.. same." he was mostly listening to her, just adding in where he felt he needed to. ryland couldn't come up with a better word for josey than sweet. she was adorable and kind and he couldn't even fathom his time on tour without her. he was so glad that she had come as well, that it was almost crazy how great he felt having a best friend. when she said she liked him, though... his heart almost stopped. "like... like how? like.. best friend? or.. like.. more than that?" his voice was shaking slightly, and he was hoping more than anything that it was the second option rather than the first. he would've given anything to be with josey as more than just best friends.
